About Us

The Floyd County Humane Society first met in 1998, officially incorporating in 1999, with the goals of reducing pep overpopulation, improving the local pound, and rehoming unwanted animals. Founding members included Floyd natives, long-time residents, and recent transplants. Early activities included lectures on pet care and the fostering of dogs whose owners could not keep them.

Our cat program began in earnest under the passionate direction of Darcie Luster in 2005. Cat rescues went from a handful each year to  seventy in 2009.

We brought low-cost spay & neuter services to Floyd by partnering with regional spay clinics. A mobile clinic or transport service has been offered every month since that time.

Our Rabies Clinics have helped hundreds of residents vaccinate their animals who would not otherwise have received this much-needed shot.

We petitioned the Board of Supervisors for permission to obtain dogs from the pound at no cost for the purposes of fostering or transporting them to other rescue groups in 2008. We finally gained official sanction to do this work in 2009, saving more than one hundred dogs from euthanasia that year. Thirty-seven of them went to rescues through our new transport program.

Our involvement with the pound has blossomed into a great working relationship. We are now able to help maintain the premises, exercise the animals, and even process direct adoptions! With our help the pound is now open nearly every Saturday morning for people to retrieve their missing animal or find a new canine friend.

All this was done by passionate volunteers who muck kennels, train dogs, show kitties, raise funds, and rouse support amongst their neighbors. It is through YOUR moral and financial support that we have been able to achieve so much in so little time. Thank you!

The Society continues to grow and change over time but these goals remain central to our mission:

  • To promote responsible pet ownership.
  • To promote pet adoption as the better alternative to “pet store purebreds” born in vast breeding mills.
  • To heighten awareness of local problems associated with dogs and cats, whether pets or feral.
  • To identify and help implement solutions to those problems in ways that are appropriate to our communities.
  • To discourage unnecessary breeding of companion animals while promoting spaying and neutering.
  • To be a voice for all animals in Floyd County without veering into extremism.
