We may not have a shelter or our own veterinary clinic but that doesn’t stop us from facilitating some much needed animal services for the people (and pets!) of Floyd. Our most visible efforts include our foster program and our monthly spay transport. Read on to see all the ways we’re lending a hand and then visit the How to Help page to sign up to lend your hands too!
Pound Pals
Remember that big petition campaign to allow us to help out at the local pound? Well, your signatures have become reality for the homeless dogs of Floyd County. That’s right, the County Supervisors have given their blessings and we’re finally able to realize the dream that got the society started!
Every Saturday (except holiday weekends) our volunteers are on site from 8 AM until Noon to “deep clean” the kennels, show animals, and even process adoptions. We are helping our very busy Animal Control Officers to increase adoptions and decrease euthanasia rates. As we do not have enough local adopters or foster homes, we work with the ACOs to identify animals that might have better prospects in other parts of the country. Some of them are lucky enough to go on transport but we’d like to one day see most of the pound puppies find local homes through direct adoption. By working together we have already gotten the euthanasia rate down form 99% to a respectable 30% … but we’d like to see it nearer to a zero euthanasia rate some day.
The Floyd County Pound is located in the fenced-in area that also contains the transfer station and recycling center at 110 Pound Road, an unpaved lane off Storker’s Knob Road, just off of Route 8 south of Floyd. Please note that officers are in the shelter from 8:30-9:30AM and 3:30-4:30 PM Monday-Friday and cannot return long distance phone calls. (But we can take a message, especially via e-mail.)
As part of our commitment to renewal at the pound the Humane Society has undertaken several improvement projects from donating washable beds for all the kennels to enlisting the help of the New River Valley Master Gardener’s Club and several area 4-H kids to beautify the pound grounds in June 2010. The dog pound is no longer a dreary end-of-the road kind of place… it’s alive with hope for the future so come out and visit the dogs. They’ll love you for it!
Spay & Neuter
On the second Monday of every month (weather permitting) we welcome the transport van from Angels of Assisi Clinic in Roanoke. Dogs and cats whose owners have registered with us are loaded up early in the morning, driven to the city for expert surgery, and then are returned in the early evening to convalesce at home with their people. The charge is very minimal and we offer grants to defray even this cost for needy individuals. Pet cats, feral cats, and all breeds of dog (weighing up to 70 pounds) are accepted on this transport. A typical dog spay with pain medication is about $75. Additional services such as pain meds, vaccination and other (minor) surgery are available from Angels at a very reasonable cost.
Request more information or sign your animal up for the next Spay Day Transport here or leave a message for the Transport Coordinator at (540) 745-7207.
Christiansburg also now has a low cost spay & neuter clinic & now have a shuttle that could come to Floyd - if there is enough demand. If you are interested in learning more about Mountain View Humane - The Waldron-Ricci Spay Neuter Clinic or scheduling an appointment, refer to their website – www.mountainviewspayneuter.org
Rabies Clinics
While we would prefer that every animal have a veterinarian that they see for yearly exams and vaccinations we realize that not everyone can afford their services. Our semi-annual shot clinics are designed to help close the most important vaccination gap.
Rabies is a fatal disease that can be passed between many kinds of animals and humans. It is considered dangerous enough that every state requires pets to be vaccinated, especially dogs. The first vaccination for rabies is “good” for one year and then your pet will need a booster shot. After the first booster pets must be vaccinated every three years to maintain solid immunity.
Clinics are usually held spring and fall in Copper Hill, Floyd, Riner, and Willis. The fee is $10-$15 for the vaccine. Feral and barn cats, pet cats, and all breeds of dog are welcome. Animals with free access to the outdoors are especially encouraged as they are at greatest risk. Watch the Floyd Press, bulletin boards, and this website for dates and times!
Pet Food Pantry
The Floyd County Humane Society, in partnership with local food charity Plenty, helps to feed the animals of people who are themselves food insecure. A pet provides so many benefits that it is our opinion that a loss of income should not necessitate giving up your beloved companion… especially when times are hard all around.
Beneficiaries of this program are identified and vetted by social services; Plenty delivers food for people and pets to the homes of those without reliable transport; and we help out by donating pet food to the program. Your help is always appreciated either in the form of a bag of kibble or a donation to this project.
The Floyd County Humane Society does not provide direct food assistance to animals at this time. Please contact New River Community Servicesif you require assistance.
Pet Listings
On this website and our Facebook page you will find listings of animals who have been lost, found, or which are awaiting adoption through the Society, the Floyd County Pound, and private individuals. We offer these listings as a free service in the hope that this website will become something of a clearinghouse for information on animals looking for the right home.
We will print your listing as you write it so please be thorough and include contact information. All listings are moderated and will automatically be deleted after two months. You can always resubmit the listing to keep it active. (After all, who hasn’t heard stories of pets returning after months away?)
Information Hub
Practically everyone in Floyd knows someone who is a Society member but few realize that many of our members would love to talk to your group about any number of animal-related topics including our projects, grooming, the commercial animal trade, basic pet care, and dog training. As you know from stopping us on the street we’re free with our knowledge and the same is true when you bring us along as a speaker. We never charge but always accept donations to the society when they are offered!
As this website matures we also hope to become your portal for many of your animal care and welfare enquiries. Whether you need to find a veterinarian, locate a rescue group with your desired kind of dog, or check on which plants are poisonous to cats we hope to provide you with a useful link on our Links page.
Oh, yes…..
We rescue animals too!
Every year we take into our homes dozens (and dozens and dozens) of cats and dogs. Many of these animals are then taken to rescues in far flung places like New York and Washington State where they have a much better chance for adoption. (Floyd’s hounds are eagerly sought after out west!) Other animals stay with us in the Foster Program while we locate good homes for them. Our “Floyd Cat Lady” single handedly places a hundred or so cats a year! Foster dogs and cats are shown at Petsmart in Christiansburg, VA and at our events throughout the year. All species of our available animals can be found on Petfinder and Adopt-A-Pet in addition to being listed on our website.
