Each year we rescue hundreds of unwanted cats and dogs in Floyd County. All these pets receive veterinary care, vaccinations, de-worming, tick control, and spay / neuter surgeries as well as the basic necessities to maintain them while in our care, which may extend to months or even years. We do not euthanize except for truly serious health or behavior problems so you can imagine that our costs per animal greatly exceed their adoption fees. We also underwrite reduced cost spay / neuter surgeries for low income pets. Please consider making a tax deductible gift to help us help them.

Animal Control

Although the FCHS is not affiliated with the Floyd County Dog Pound, we work closely with them to promote pet adoption and animal welfare. Whereas dogs in FCHS care are kept in private foster homes until their adoption, the Floyd County Dog Pound is not a "no kill" shelter. Therefore, animals in their care can only be held a limited time before they are euthanized. We encourage you to browse the dogs available for adoption at the shelter when considering a pet for your family.

The Floyd County Dog Pound does not take in cats at this time.

(*NOTE: Pets that are surrendered voluntarily to the pound by their owners can be immediately euthanized without a waiting period! Please think twice before surrendering your pet to the pound.)

Directions to County Pound:

From the north: take Rt 8 south. From I-81 it's 18.3 miles to the stop light in Floyd, continue south 1.08 mile to Storkers Knob Rd, turn left and once you're on Storkers Knob Rd, turn right just before the green boxes onto Pound Road and the pound is at the bottom of the driveway.

From the west : take Rt 221 north. From the Carroll, Floyd county line it's 15.09 miles to the stop light in Floyd. Turn right, go south 1.08 miles to Storkers Knob Rd and once you're on Storkers Knob Rd, turn right just before the green boxes onto Pound Road and the pound is at the bottom of the driveway.

From the east: take Rt 221 south. From the Roanoke, Floyd county line it's 20.06 miles to the stop light in Floyd. Turn left go 1.08 miles to Storkers Knob Rd and once you're on Storkers Knob Rd, turn right just before the green boxes onto Pound Road and the pound is at the bottom of the driveway.

From the south : take Rt 8 north from the Blue Ridge Pkwy it's 2.05 miles to Storkers Knob Rd. Turn right and once you're on Storkers Knob Rd, turn right just before the green boxes onto Pound Road and the pound is at the bottom of the driveway.

The Floyd County Humane Society is dedicated to the principle that all animals deserve responsible and respectful treatment.

We serve Floyd County, in the New River Valley, by promoting this basic principle, providing for needy animals, assisting the Floyd Pound, and facilitating low cost spay and neuter surgeries.

FCHS is a non-profit, all volunteer, foster-based, all breed, humane society with 501(c)3 status. We work closely with the Floyd Pound which is maintained by the Animal Control Division of the Sheriff’s Department. We are also independent of the Humane Society of the United States and do not receive funding from either entity.

Thundershirts are helping shelters and rescue groups across the country to manage the dogs they receive with anxiety, fear and excitement issues. For as little as $27, your Thundershirt Donation will be put to excellent use helping to transition one of our wonderful dogs back to a forever home.
