Check the videos below for a small preview! What is Cabin Fever? Cabin Fever is a live music fundraiser presented twice a year by Cabin Fever Charity Events. In 2013, Rob and Whitney Maddox founded the organization in memory of their friend, T. Kevin Dodson. Since that first concert, they've presented Cabin Fever once or twice a year in the spring and/or summer (with the exception of 2020). Rob and Whitney have a passion for animals. In the early years of Cabin Fever, the charity funded four St. Francis Service Dogs. Since 2019, Cabin Fever has raised over $106,000 for the Floyd County Humane Society's new shelter facility and kennels. Remember--100% of proceeds benefit the Floyd County Humane Society.  Janis Joplin, Rockstar Mama! If you would like to adopt Janis or one of the kittens in this story, start by filling out an adoption application (link provided in the article below) Part 1: Janis and the J Family She starts her career as an obscure but competent meow-sician. Reports are that she is a wild mama (with four kittens in her band) and that she will never conform to the norms of human society. We dispatch two talent scouts (Floyd County Humane Society volunteers) to see if we can catch a performance. She is elusive, and moves her band several times. It is clear she does not want to be "discovered." We find her kittens and surprisingly, they are tame and cuddly. We found them in time! But where is wild mama? We stand on the grassy lawn of the outdoor venue where she last performed, debating the best plan to see her in action. Her kittens begin an irresistible chorus of mewling. We look up and see the elusive, wild meow-sician, cautiously judging the situation, checking her kittens from a distance. One of our experienced volunteer talent scouts waits patiently while wild mama approaches. She knows how to recruit even the toughest talent! She gains her trust. Wild mama relaxes, and transforms into a friendly, gregarious cat! She is NOT wild! The manager at the grassy outdoor venue signs up two of the kittens to stay and perform at her place forever. Our talent scouts sign the Mom and the remaining two kittens as "The J family." Mom takes the stage name Janis Joplin and her kittens, Jimi Hendrix and Joni Mitchell. Part 2: Janis and the K Family Janis and kittens live safely and creatively at an FCHS content house (foster home) for a few weeks while they develop their own style of meow-sicianship Our volunteers sense that it is time for Jimi and Joni to go in different creative directions. Coincidentally, FCHS receives another report about four 9-day-old orphan kittens who lost their lead singer/mom. We take the four kittens and dub the group "The K family." Without their mom, their prospects for success seem in doubt. The smallest, who we name "Katy Purry," is lifeless. We think she is already gone. We expect the others, Keith Moon, Kid Rock, Kurt Cobain to require bottle feeding and extra care. Then, one of our volunteers suggests that Janis is still lactating and might be able to help feed, mentor and train the orphans. And that's exactly what Janis is doing! Janis accepts the four "K" orphans and even tiny Katy Purry miraculously survives. Janis is jammin' it with her second family--nursing, grooming and caring for them in her own amazing Floyd FelineFest!
