- To support the community in the humane and healthy treatment of their pets through such programs as low-cost vaccination clinics, distribution of free pet food through the area food pantry, free identification collars, and an emergency medical fund;
- To heighten the community's awareness of existing challenges with the pet population and together implement solutions via robust online and print informational outreach.
WHO WE ARE & WHAT WE’VE DONE
The Floyd County Humane Society first met in 1998 and officially incorporated in 2000, with immediate goals to reduce pet overpopulation, improve the local pound, and find new homes for unwanted animals. Our founding members included Floyd natives, long-time residents, and recent transplants. Early on, our members gave lectures on pet care and about dog fostering programs for owners who could not keep them.
Our cat program began in earnest in 2005. Cat rescues and adoptions have been a wonderful success. We have a successful partnership with Mountain View Humane's TNR program for feral cats.
We brought low-cost spay and neuter services to Floyd by partnering with regional clinics. A mobile clinic, or transport to clinics, has been offered every month since that time. Our rabies clinics have helped hundreds of residents vaccinate their animals, who would not otherwise have received this vitally important vaccination.
Through our partnership with animal control, we have reduced their euthanasia rate tremendously, and helped transfer countless dogs into our foster care, or to other rescue organizations. Our involvement with the pound has blossomed into a great working relationship.
All this was done by passionate volunteers willing to muck the kennels, train dogs, show kitties, raise funds, and rouse support amongst their neighbors. It is through your moral and financial support that we have been able to achieve so much in so little time.
Thank you!
