The day ran without a hitch because of you! *We give much appreciation to Dr. Kathy Davieds! Thank you for your time and dedication to protecting the health of our furry family members. *Thank you to Willis Elementary School for letting us use their parking lot. It made everything run so smoothly! We hope to provide another free rabies clinic in the fall. Stay tuned for details! ![]() They've been working hard to raise money (over $84,000!) for our future shelter.Let's help them make Cabin Fever 11 a successful and fun event!
![]() FCHS is fortunate to have received several grants over the last few months. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors and let everyone know how we plan to use these funds. THANK YOU!
APRIL 2023 PETCO LOVE We received $2,000 from Petco Love’s 2022 Animal Welfare Organization grant cycle. These funds will go towards our shelter construction fund. MARCH 2023 VIRGINIA FEDERATION OF HUMANE SOCIETIES & SpayVA We received $2,000 in spay/neuter grant funding that will help us continue our mission of reducing the pet population in our area. The goal of the SpayVA Grants is to reduce shelter intake and euthanasia by funding local spay/neuter efforts. NOVEMBER 2022 & MARCH 2023 WALMART We received two local community grants from the Fairlawn and Christiansburg stores totaling $750. These funds will continue to fund our free rabies clinics offered to the community! We were awarded another Community Grant ($1500) earlier in 2022. That allowed us to host our first FREE rabies clinic for the community. With the support of Walmart, we hosted our 2nd FREE rabies clinic on 4-29-23. We were able to give free vaccinations to 179 pets total from this support! NOVEMBER 2022 THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE NEW RIVER VALLEY We would like to thank and recognize both the Community Foundation of the New River Valley and the Beverly A. & Homer T. Hurst Family Fund. The Floyd County Humane Society received $4,000 from the Beverly A. & Homer T. Hurst Family Fund. These funds will go into our general operations and dog training for at risk dogs that come into our care to give them the socialization and training to become wonderful family pets. SEPTEMBER 2022 LARRY WOODROW VEST FUND & THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION SERVING WESTERN VIRGINIA We want to give a HUGE thank you to the Larry Woodrow Vest Fund and the Community Foundation Serving Western Virginia. With their grant of $11,000, we were able to install an emergency backup generator for both our shelter house and dog shelter in February. The dogs and cats in our care will be safe with heat/air and water when the power is out. ![]() Thank You to our hard-working volunteers who work on average of 1800 hours a month, serving as foster families, taking care of our animals, organizing spay neuter and rabies clinics, providing administrative support, organizing, and working fundraising events, cleaning and maintenance of our property!
Several folks have also provided continued support and through their efforts, provided much needed operating funds: Buffalo Mountain Brewery, Dog Town Roadhouse and Girl Scout Troop 163. This has been a transformative time for the Floyd County Humane Society. We have in the last 18 months gone from all rented and personal home space to one central location. Over the many years, we could not have accomplished our mission without a few significant folks. Dr. Meredith McGrath allowed us to rent kennel space at the Animal Care Clinic on Rt8. Her and her staff provided much needed support for our operations. Another significant person who has served as the primary caretaker of our cats and kittens during the last several years by housing them in a structure on her property, Dr. Anna Simms! A few more folks have also stepped up to provide guidance, time, talent and treasure: Ellen and Whitney Brown, and Aaron and Ann Vaughn. It has long been a goal of ours to have a physical facility for our work. The Ted and Shirley Birkeland estate, in honor of their beloved dog, Louie-Pierre provided funds which allowed us to purchase property on Franklin Pike in 2020. Since then, we’ve been renovating the brick house to accommodate our many needs and in June of this year, we passed the Virginia state inspection to house animals. Also in the past year, 2 special donors offered to fund a pre-built dog kennel and provide funds for the site work. We are so excited to announce that as of Oct 1, we were fully operating at the Franklin Pike location! We would like to recognize and thank Karen Freeman and Robin Smith! Between these two generous and thoughtful gifts, FCHS has been transformed from working in multiple locations to a fully functioning organization at one site! Going forward, we are aspiring toward a permanent shelter to serve the county. We can not accomplish this alone; we have a partner that has worked diligently for the last several years helping us raise funds for a permanent shelter. Cabin Fever Charities, by Whitney and Rob Maddox host music events that have provided the bulk of our phase one funds. Lastly, we would like to thank each and every single person who donated online, or dropped a dollar or two into our containers located at local businesses, we cannot do this important work without your help. Have a safe and healthy 2023. ![]() |
