Shelter Update-We're Making Progress!

​The Floyd County Humane Society's priority is to construct our very own animal shelter. For years, we have relied on our volunteers to foster cats and dog at their homes or rented kennel space.

In 2020 we received a generous estate gift, allowing us to purchase outright a 9-acre property, which includes a brick home on site.

Since then we have made great strides toward creating our own animal shelter in Floyd!
In 2021

1. In July, we installed internet and a security system and began holding monthly membership meetings at the new site (we formerly met at Zion Lutheran Church). 
2. In September, we met with three different architectural firms to teach them about our organization, and share and gather information about the design of the new shelter.

​​In 2022

1. In May, we consolidated all of our offices, storage, and meeting space at the new location and moved donated items, supplies, files, and more from multiple storage areas and organized them.
2. In June, we passed the mandatory inspection by VDACS Office of Veterinary Services! The approval allows us to care for both dogs and cats at the new site. The shelter committee also looked at shelter design proposals, selected an architectural firm and reviewed schematic drawings. We also received a generous anonymous donation that allowed us to build a small dog shelter (pictured above--large enough to house seven dogs) by October 1!  The small shelter will ease the pressure on our limited resources while we continue to raise money for the large, permanent shelter building.
3. In July, we began housing cats at the site. We also graded the property, implemented VDOT recommendations for the driveway and added a concrete slab with drainage for the  temporary dog shelter.
4. In August, we received new and improved "cat condos" for housing cats at the site.
5. ​In September, we moved our first dog to the new temporary shelter! 
   

As of September 2022, we are over 50% of the way to reaching the first phase of our donation goal of $250,000. The amount includes a $22,000 donation from Rob and Whitney Maddox's organization, Cabin Fever raised during their annual concert event in June.
